diocesi castellaneta collection
In may 2017, MuMa’s art collection has been enriched with new spiritually relevant majolica pieces coming from Santuario Diocesano Maria SS.ma Mater Domini, parish of S. Maria Assunta, confraternity of Santa Maria la Presentazione e San Carlo, and Famiglia Cillo’s donation. Our museum already had a turquoise plaque depicting the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, which dates back to 1703; the new additions were a polychrome holy water font (which had been taken from the sacristy of the church and later retrieved by the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage in Bari), attributed to the nameless “Master of naturalistic decorations”, and the two apotropaic bottles (now replaced with two replicas) originally placed on top of the marble altar built in front of the 14th century fresco of the Virgin Mary.
